Instant Pot Beef and Broccoli

8 Minute Spicy Beef and Broccoli dish is a great alternative to take out,  not only because it is healthier, but it also comes together in an electric pressure cooker in less time than delivery!

The last thing I needed in my life was another kitchen gadget. I am a bit of a tech geek and if it is something new and innovative in a kitchen, I am ALL OVER IT!

When I started hearing about electric pressure cookers and how dinners can be cooked in less than 10 minutes, I had to see if this was for real.

It has been 2 years since this post, and I use my electric pressure cooker at least 3 days a week – still!

I call this 8 minute beef and broccoli, but that doesn’t include the time  takes for the gadget to get to pressure. Cook time is nice and short, but total prep time, you are looking at 20 minutes.

In my opinion that is still an epic busy lady kitchen win!

A lesson learned in pressure cooking experiments – I typically don’t add the veggies until the pressure cycle is done.

I have tried a few things with veggies in the instant pot, and my preference is to add the veggies after the 7 minute cycle and use saute to cook them.

For make ahead:

  1. simply whisk together the sauce (minus the cornstarch).
  2. Cut the meat and veggies up (storing them separately), then on your weeknight, dump in the pressure cooker and hit 7 minutes.

Bam! Dinner.

Ingredients

  • Steak cut into strips (approx 2 pounds), Sirloin works best.
  • 1 Onion diced
  • 1 TBS minced ginger
  • 4 minced garlic cloves
  • 1 Cup beef broth
  • 1/4 Cup soy sauce
  • 2 TBS brown sugar
  • 1/4 TSP Chinese 5 spice
  • 1 TBS sesame oil
  • 1/4 TSP red pepper flakes add more to increase spiciness.
  • 2 Cups broccoli
  • 2 Carrots julienned
  • 2 TBS cornstarch mixed with 2 TBS water

Instructions

  • Whisk sauce together using the onion, ginger, garlic, beef broth, soy sauce, brown sugar, Chinese 5 spice, sesame oil, and red pepper flakes - inside the Instant Pot insert. DO NOT ADD THE CORNSTARCH SLURRY HERE.
  • Add the sliced steak.
  • Set pressure cooker for 7 minutes.
  • Quick release pressure and add in the cornstarch slurry, carrots and broccoli.
  • Set pressure cooker to saute for one minute so the broccoli cooks.
  • Garnish with sesame seeds and serve with rice or noodles.

Notes

Note: this recipe is an 8 minute pressure cook time. This does not include the time to pressure up and depressurize. Either way - its quicker than you can order takeout!

This is a great recipe as a leftover lunch as well!

So there you have it, a quick way to skip the takeout and have dinner on the table in 20 minutes!

  1. After adding the cornstarch do you put the lid back on or saute?
    If you put the lid back on and set cooker for one minute, do you manually release the pressure?

    1. I just add cornstarch and saute a few minutes, lid off. I manually release after veggies, they will over cook if you don’t.

    1. I have not made this from frozen, but typically with instant pot recipes you do not need to adjust the pressure time. The time to come to pressure will increase significantly.

    Just made this. DEEE LISHHH USSSSS!!!!!! I doubled the sauce since I like sauce and didnt have any 5 spice and it was still amazing. Did just as directions said. Better than takeout! Thank you!

  3. My New Year’s Resolution is to do a better job of cooking for my family (my husband is the cook, but he travels a lot so when he’s not home it’s survival mode over here!) We’ve had an Instant Pot for over a year and I’ve never used it! I’m finding lots of inspiration from your site. So…question from a newbie cook here…what kind of steak do you use?

  4. I’m making this for tonight . Can I go ahead and add the meat to the sauce and let it marinate for the day? Or would that make it to strong?

  5. Would I be able to use frozen broccoli instead of fresh? I hardly buy fresh broc anymore because it goes bad before we eat it all!

    1. you can… it will have a different texture but if your family is used to it and likes frozen broccoli go ahead!
