It turns out, Bone Broth is more than just a food trend and there are 5 good reasons to cook with bone broth!
Bone broth has become popular and it got me wondering, why? Is this a catchy food trend, or are there reasons to cook with bone broth and ditch the powder stuff?
I asked my girl Whitney, owner of Borderland Food Co, a local producer of bone broth, why I should use bone broth in my cooking, and not a carton or powdered mix?
She agreed to tell me all the ways that bone broth is more than a food trend, and that there are 5 reasons to cook with bone broth!
This is not a sponsored post, and I thank Whitney for educating me.. and now you!
What is Bone Broth?
The difference is between bone broths and shelf stable carton broths and powders is that bone broth is made with actual real bones, veggies and spices and should be made with organic and clean ingredients (but always check the label just in case!).
Bone Broth is simmered for anywhere from 12-24 hours in order to really extract the nutrients and flavors.
To compare to stock on the shelf: it is mass produced, and it can be difficult to discern how exactly it is made, or what it is made from.
5 Reasons to Cook with Bone Broth!
1 | Bone broth has healing qualities
Bone broth is full of nutritious compounds and minerals like collagen, glucosamine, amino acids, and electrolytes.
These nutrients are exactly what bone broth is all about!
The bones are simmered for such an extreme amount of time in order to pull these goodies out of the bones and joints. These nutrients are amazing and help with gut health, joint health and improved immunity among many other things.
2 | It is makes you full
Bone broth has a fair amount of protein and some healthy fat along with all of those other nutrients we just talked about.
As a result, it’s actually quite filling! That shelf stable stuff is essentially devoid of nutrients, so while it will provide flavor, it will not fill you up.
3 | The ingredients in bone broth are “clean”.
Of course check the specifics of the brand you use. A good quality brand will use 100% organic veggies and spices and absolutely no preservatives or additives – and be sold FROZEN. The same can’t be said for shelf stable carton broths.
4 | Helpful for improving our skin, hair and nails!
All of the collagen in bone broth is great for skin hair and nail health, which is definitely a bonus on top of all the other healing qualities that comes with this super food.
5 | You are supporting a small business
Almost all of the bone broth companies that are available on the (Canadian) market are produced by small, local entrepreneurs.
Every time you buy a package of bone broth from a small business, they do a tiny little happy dance. Supporting local AND improving your health?! Those are a couple of really strong reasons to make the switch!
What can you make with Bone Broth?
You can use bone broth anywhere stock is called for in a recipe. I use it in my Dijon Thyme Chicken Tender meal prep, my easy One Pot Sausage Linguine, my Curried Carrot Lentil Soup… just to name a few!
You can also just drink it straight up.
