I discovered spiralizing a couple of years ago and it changed the way I prepped, cooked, and even shifted my mentality around veggies. Veggies went from being a boring but necessary side dish, to the awesome main dish!
It is so strange how just prepping the same ol veggies into different shapes can make such an impact.
But, once I found this new way to prep and cook with veggies, it became easy to fill up my plate and belly with less calorie dense, and higher nutrient dense food.
Not to say I won’t throw some bacon in there, or put crushed up Doritos on them, because I sure do that… but for the most part I found an easy way to try new veggies, and have so much more of my diet vegetable based.
I am often asked which one to purchase, and while I can’t tell you which one is right for you, I can tell you about what I have noticed about the ones I have tried.
I have started teaching spiralizing workshops locally, and have been able to test out different spiralizers on the market!
First things first. Not all spiralizers are the same.
There are categories of spiralizers and they each have their own awesome factors… and some not so awesome factors! Then to complicate things further, within each category there are different brands.
My plan here is to highlight the categories, the brands in each I have tried, and then what I love and didn’t love about them – in hopes it can help you decide which one is best for you.
This is a very inexpensive option, but in this case, you certainly get what you pay for. You have to put a lot of effort into churning out veggie noodles, and you are extremely limited in the veggie types that will work with this one.
If all you want is zoodles (zucchini noodles), and you aren’t doing them all the time, this inexpensive option is for you.
If you plan to go beyond zucchini.. keep reading.
Counter Top VERTICAL Handcrank Spiralizers
This option is great because you can use gravity to your advantage while spiralizing – sometimes you need quite a bit of pressure on the blades to get a good cut. I also find since the pressure is going down into your countertop, the spiralizer doesn’t move around as much as you spiralize – which is a great positive.
But, the disadvantages out weigh the advantages for me on this one.
I have tried a couple of brands in this category and found the same issues with both:
- Tiny blades that I would 100% lose. They are no bigger than a razor blade.
- Restricted on size of veggie to fit – won’t be able to spiralize things like cabbage.
- Took way more rotations (aka your energy and time) to get through produce.
This type of spiralizer will get you veggie noodles, but for the price point, I found the next category to work better and cost less (in most cases).
If this is the model for you, this Mueller Spiralizer is the way to go.
Counter Top HORIZONTAL Handcrank Spiralizers
This category of spiralizers is my favourite because it is the only category that gives you the ability to to spiralize every spiralizable veggie (or fruit!).
The Starfrit and the Paderno are extremely similar in my opinion. They both have 3 blade sizes and are the same with respect to usability.
- Superior suction. Almost the entire bottom surface suctions to the counter.
- The blades are wicked sharp and so they cut better. This is a blessing and a curse. You have to be extremely careful handing this model.
- 4 noodles sizes instead of 3.
- Blades are changed with a rotating mechanism and are not removable – bye bye lost blades!
- Smaller/more compact – easier to store.
With any of these models the main disadvantages are with the ability for the unit to suction to the counter top, and some veggies (rutabaga!) require major effort!
This is my personal favourite type of spiralizer and I own the Inspiralizer and use it weekly!
This is the spiralizer type for you if you want to spiralize everything possible and don’t mind a bit of work to crank out those noodles.
This category is fairly new but I see models popping up from many different brands now. I tried the Starfrit model – and I use them in my teaching workshops.
It really is effortless and you get such beautiful noodles!
The disadvantages with this category are:
- the chute that holds the veggie is quite restrictive in size. This means you can’t spiralize everything that is possible to spiralize.
- The veggies also need to be cylindrical in shape, whereas with the horizontal counter top models, you can pop on any size and go. So, with this model, I am spending time cutting down things like butternut squash into pieces and sizes that fit in the chute.
If you don’t mind doing a little up front prep work to get your veggie the right size for the chute, and prefer the machine to do all of the work – this is the type of spiralizer for you.
As you figure you which spiralizer is for you, think about how much kitchen storage space you have, and what kind of things you want to spiralize.

Like any kitchen tool on the market, there are many variations and types and it is based on what is most important to you. For me, being able to spiralize every possible thing is important. I also find the modifications on the Inspiralizer to make a big difference so my spiralizer of choice is the Inspiralizer.
